The concept of "Balāʾ" (trial/test) in verse 7:141 of the Qur'an, despite the exegetical consensus on its dual nature (as both blessing and tribulation), has been the focal point for the formation of diverse analytical functions within the interpretive tradition of Fariqain (Sunni and Shia schools). This study, employing a qualitative and comparative content analysis method, aims to investigate this functional evolution by examining a wide range of Shia and Sunni exegeses. The findings indicate that in classical commentaries, "Balāʾ" primarily serves three common theological functions: "bestowal and remembrance" of the grace of salvation, elucidation of the "universal tradition of divine testing" to assess patience and gratitude, and establishment of an "experiential proof" for monotheism (Tawhid). However, in the contemporary era, a significant paradigmatic shift has occurred, transforming this concept into a tool for "social pathology." Modern exegetes, inspired by this verse, have critically addressed identity crises, the danger of blind imitation, and the vulnerabilities of societies in the aftermath of liberationist revolutions. This paper concludes that the "tradition of Balāʾ," as a common interpretive foundation, not only holds great potential for scholarly and ecumenical dialogue between Islamic denominations but also, through its dynamic response to the needs of each era, demonstrates the capacity of Qur'anic concepts to analyze emergent issues.
