The "literary interpretation" theory is a contemporary approach in Quranic studies introduced by Egyptian reformist Amin Khuli. His students later applied this theory in practice. Khuli articulated his theory in scattered works, leaving its essence somewhat ambiguous, particularly due to the term "adab" (literature), which often evokes its conventional meaning related to Arabic grammar and literary arts.
This article, using library-based research and focusing on Khuli's works, examines the nature of literary interpretation in his theory and its distinction from similar approaches. Findings reveal that "adab" in Khuli's theory aligns more with "cultural" rather than linguistic or literary meanings. Literary interpretation, thus, can be understood as a "cultural interpretation with a social approach," focusing on the cultural context of the Quran's revelation era. It aims to determine the Quran's meaning as understood by its initial audience, requiring specific methodologies.
In conclusion, contemporary literary interpretation fundamentally differs from traditional literary exegesis centered on Arabic grammar and rhetoric. To evaluate it accurately, its foundations, components, and historical context must be examined. It also possesses unique features distinguishing it from rhetorical or historical interpretations.
